Why choose a separate numeric keypad?

A separate numeric keypad allows number entry without permanently widening the main keyboard. It can be placed on the left or right and moved aside when it is not needed. This keeps the mouse close and reduces unnecessary sideways reaching. Positioning it on the opposite side to the mouse hand also allows number entry and mouse use to be shared between both hands. Research by Cook and Kothiyal (1998) found less activity in parts of the shoulder muscle when the mouse was positioned next to a keyboard without a fixed numeric keypad.
